SwissMaxx · pre-launch

Understanding your Swiss health-insurance premium notice.

A premium notice tells you more than the next monthly amount. Read it alongside your current policy so you can see what changed and what you need to confirm before making a decision.

Your first-pass checklist

  • Match the insured person, address and policy number.
  • Separate compulsory basic insurance from supplementary cover.
  • Compare the current and new monthly premiums for the same cover.
  • Check the deductible, insurance model and accident-cover status.
  • Record the effective date and the notice’s switching instructions.
  • Keep unresolved questions and proposed changes separate from confirmed cover.

1. Separate the premium from treatment costs

The premium is the regular charge for your insurance. The deductible and other cost-sharing amounts concern what you pay towards treatment. They are different figures: a lower monthly premium does not, by itself, establish a lower total annual cost.

Compare the same insured person, period and coverage settings. If the notice combines several people or types of cover, identify the individual lines before comparing totals. Ask the insurer to explain any amount you cannot reconcile with your current policy.

2. Read the settings behind the price

Check the deductible and model shown in both documents. A higher optional deductible can reduce the premium while increasing the amount you must be prepared to pay yourself. Models that restrict the choice of provider can also change how you first access care.

Check whether accident cover is included. Suspension depends on qualifying accident insurance elsewhere; the FOPH describes the conditions. A checkbox on a cheaper comparison is not enough to establish that you qualify.

3. Keep basic and supplementary insurance separate

Basic and supplementary insurance follow different rules. The FOPH explains that supplementary insurers may refuse an application or impose restrictions following a health assessment. Do not assume a change to basic insurance requires cancelling supplementary cover, or that acceptance for one establishes acceptance for the other.

Make two lists if your notice includes both. For each, record the insurer, product, amount and any instructions that need confirmation. This keeps one proposed change from silently becoming a decision about all your cover.

4. Check the decision window before acting

For basic-insurance changes effective on 1 January, current FOPH guidance gives 31 October for notification of the new premium and 30 November for cancellation. The insurer must receive the cancellation in time; the postmark is not the deciding date. Check the guidance and the circumstances of your policy, including any outstanding amounts, before relying on this route.

Use the federal Priminfo calculator to explore basic-insurance premiums with consistent settings. Record an option as a comparison until you have checked the terms and completed the required steps. A potential difference in premiums is not a saving already achieved.

Fictional worked example

A monthly increase, with one setting still to verify

Current premium
CHF 410 per month — fictional
New premium
CHF 438 per month — fictional
Difference
CHF 28 per month; CHF 336 over 12 equal monthly premiums
Uncertainty
Does the new notice have the same model and accident cover?
Prepared next step
Confirm those settings before comparing alternatives

CHF 336 is an illustrative increase in premiums, not a forecast of treatment costs or a claim of savings. No insurance has been changed.
